Pécs-Pogány Airport
The Pécs-Pogány Airport is located 9 km south-west of the city. The 1,500 m long runway was inaugurated in autumn 2003 and the airport itself was opened to the public in March 2006. Austrian Airlines ran scheduled flights to Vienna until 2006, when the service was halted. Over this period of operation the airline carried 3074 passengers. In the summer 2007 daily direct flights with a capacity of carrying 30 passengers departed to Corfu, Greece three times a week with maximum enplanements.
The size of the asphalt runway (heading 16/34) is 1,500m by 30 m, and is adequate for 46 tons of aircraft weights. It is situated at 198 m above sea level. The runway is equipped with a full-range lighting system and with a Category-1 ILS. Developments are targeted at expanding the capacities of the airport for the landing of larger size planes. The European Capital of Culture Programme may be an excellent occasion to start scheduled flights again.
Hungary’s high voltage electrical power network
The reform of the electrical power industry was launched in 1994 when Act XLVIII of 1994 on regulating the generation, transmission and supply of electrical energy was passed, and the Hungarian Energy Office was established followed by the first wave of the energy sector privatization.
Privatisation was carried out in several steps. At present most power stations and 100% of electrical energy suppliers, which are now operating as network and supplier companies due to deregulation processes, are in private ownership.
The attempts of the European Union to create a single market contributed to the deregulation of the energy sector, which resulted in enforcing Act CX of 2001 on electrical energy supply on 1 January 2003.
The city of Pécs is directly linked with the Paks Nuclear Power Plant, the largest generator of electricity in Hungary, as well as with the national transmission network. The 400-kV system can satisfy the entire need of the region. The security of supply is increased by the fact that the system is linked with the grid of Croatia, which enables a two-way transmission.
Natural gas supply
Pécs and its surrounding area are directly linked with the Hungarian South Great Plain gas production and storing facility, which provides the system with the necessary amount of energy through its pipelines. The energy supply of the region is secure, the only risk involved, depending on the volume of security reserves, is the cut-offs of international supplies.
Pan-European corridors
At the First Pan-European Transport Conference in Prague in 1991 the European Commission and the representatives of the European countries concerned in the developments decided to launch a common concept on transport infrastructure. This was how the idea of the Pan-European Transport Corridors was born. Originally the representatives agreed upon a network covering Eastern and Western Europe. At the subsequent conferences, namely in Crete in 1994 and in Helsinki in 1997, an agreement to expand the network was signed, involving the appointment of ten later referred to as Helsinki-corridors. These routes are to create an integrated network and cover the entire area of the European Community, the Balkans and Eastern Europe.
Transport Corridor 8 is the Danube, which promotes inland waterway navigation from Germany to the Black Sea. The project makes the northern European sea ports also accessible through the Rhine- Main-Danube Canal. In Mohács, a town 40 km away from Pécs, the border crossing port of the European Union is operating and the project of the public port providing goods transport services has been completed.
