Pécs 2010 European Capital of Culture
On 14 July 2005 the General Assembly of the city unanimously accepted the application to be submitted, which later made Pécs the winner of the title European Capital of Culture 2010 (ECC) among the competing European cities. The city of Pécs was given an outstanding opportunity to restructure its economy, putting knowledge to work.
Not just for the city but for the whole South Transdanubian Region is the ECC title a great opportunity for development. The key public investment projects are destined to provide, on the one hand, cutting-edge venues for the cultural programmes at a European level and, on the other hand, proper infrastructure for the long-term development of the creative industry in Pécs.
The central components of the ECC project are to raise community awareness, make citizens enjoy urban life, give public spaces back to local communities by making streets and squares more viable and create a sustainable environment.
The key projects are targeted at creating new cultural and art venues of necessary capacity and of European standards, which are to contribute to turning local cultural potential into economic results, boosting the creative and tourism industries.
